5th Grade
Overview
In Fifth Grade, students will have the opportunity to learn and develop in a loving and structured environment. There will be many opportunities for students to be challenged to make wise choices. Emphasis will be placed on creating an attitude of teamwork as students interact with one another in the classroom. Students will also be encouraged to treat others with gentleness and kindness in and out of the classroom setting.

Literature
Number the Stars - Story of how a Christian family in Denmark helps their Jewish friends escape the Nazis.
From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler - Story of a 10 year old girl who runs away with her younger brother to the museum searching for excitement and meaning in her life. With the help of Mrs. Frankweiler and a mysterious angel statue she finds it.
Old Yeller - When a young teenage boy is left to care for his family while his dad searches for work, an estranged dog ends up helping him and changes his life more than he could have expected.
Island of the Blue Dolphins – An Indian girl is left on an island and learns to adapt and survive on her own. She waits season after season for a ship to reunite her with her family.
My Side of the Mountain - A teenage boy leaves a crowded New York City apartment to survive o his own in the Catskill Mountains.

Students have the opportunity to learn about the Parts of Speech, in addition to many Creative Writing experiences (i.e. persuasive letter, personal narrative, comparison/contrast, research, etc.)

Students will learn a variety of concepts, including addition, multiplication, subtraction & division of decimals and fractions. Many opportunities for problem solving practice.

Study of Ancient Civilizations, including the Ancient Middle East, Asia, and Africa; Geography of the Middle East, Asia and Africa as well

A chronological study of the Old Testament from I Samuel to Malachi.
