2nd Grade
Overview
In Second Grade, we will see our classroom as a place filled with love, acceptance and respect for one another. We will also learn to become effective problem solvers and become more responsible for our work and our actions. We will be encouraged to develop a personal relationship with God. It is our goal to recognize that God is the creator and sustainer of everything as we study the world around us.

Bible
Finding God’s Promises (Positive Action For Christ)
Students will learn that when God gives a command, He also gives a promise. They will also begin to see how obedience to God’s commands brings blessings as God fulfills His promises in their lives. A daily devotion based on the fruits of the Spirit and many traditional and praise songs are incorporated as well.
Reading
Scott Foresman Reading
This is a basal reading program designed to develop a broad vocabulary base and strengthen comprehension skills. Creative writing and language arts skills are also incorporated within the units through guided and independent workbook pages. The quality literature provided encourages the success and enjoyment of reading.
Language Arts
Handwriting without Tears (HWT)
This program combines handwriting instruction with punctuation, paragraph, poem and language arts activities. Additionally, instruction in cursive handwriting is covered.
Everyday Spelling, (Scott Foresman)
The second grade spelling study presents a variety of spelling strategies that students can use in their writing. A phonetic skill is strengthened in each lesson.
Mathematics
Mathematics, Grade 2 (A Beka)
The students will learn double-digit addition and subtraction, time, money, and basic geometry. They will also begin to look at fractions, decimals, multiplication and division.
Science
Harcourt Science
Ahands-on program that encourages students to become actively involved in the discovery of their world. The students will see that this world belongs to God, the one who created and upholds it. They will discover plants, animals, the solar system, earth’s resources, weather, matter, forces and motion,and sound.
Social Studies
Our America (A Beka)
The students will learn the principles that made our country greatandstudy the people who built America. They will learn of the colonists, Separatists, America's Indians andpioneers. They will also gain a basic knowledge of geography through the study of thecontinents, oceans, directions, communities and the location and names of the fifty states.
